Everything Great Starts with a Question…

For some, that question is about the camera itself. It might be a barrier, restricting your creativity; the dials and menus are foreign, leaving you uncertain about whether you will come home with anything you are pleased with. You long for the knowledge to understand your camera more clearly, so you can translate your feelings about a place into a photograph.

For others, the camera is no longer the barrier. The question is much deeper. You might know your settings, perhaps fluently, and yet your photographs feel a little empty. They might be technically sound, perfect even, but they are missing the story you most wanted them to tell. You sense there’s a unique way of seeing the world waiting to be uncovered.

All of your questions are welcome here. Both of those above, in my experience, are answered less by instruction than by something different altogether: slowing down, being present, paying closer attention, and being met by a tutor who listens deeply to understand exactly where you are.

I know these questions because I have asked them both myself. I came to the camera during a difficult chapter of my life, fumbling with its interface and confused by its settings. A little while later, I found myself technically capable but creatively lost, sensing that my photographs were missing something I could not yet understand. The natural world — and the intentional practice of really seeing it — was the pathway towards the answers for both questions. For the better part of a decade, I have walked that path, and for 5 years, I have worked intimately with over 200 other photographers. It would be an honour to walk a little of it alongside you.

There are two pathways to creative growth, depending on where you find yourself. Both are described below.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

“This was a workshop with a difference. I was hoping the day would lift my images to the next level, and with Brad’s help, I feel I achieved that. It had nothing to do with the equipment or camera operation, but everything to do with mindset, slowing down, and allowing myself to become attuned to my surroundings. I now see how important it is to be present in the moment, not to rush, and to let images present themselves to you. A very enjoyable and productive experience.’’

Those with the basics in hand, seeking depth, meaning, and the contemplative dimensions of their practice.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

‘‘Brad’s style of teaching is that of a coach that wants to help you get the best out of your own vision and art. This is not about telling you what to do, it is about asking you to think about why you are taking that particular picture and how you might improve it. This is for those who really want to take their photography to a new level of meaning and thinking. It made me realise that the most important part of the experience is to be out in nature and to try and use my photography to share the benefits of how this makes me feel.’’

What Makes These Workshops Different?

  • My aim is not to guide a group to the same spot I once stood and tell everyone which settings to use. These days are designed to get you thinking like you and seeing in a way that only you can. There is space for open, honest, thought-provoking conversation about light, life, and landscape, alongside practical guidance that meets you wherever you are.

  • Although there is time to focus on the basics (especially on Foundations workshops), I commit much of my focus towards the more spiritual, emotional, and psychological side of the art. There is as much time spent exploring the inner landscapes through conversation as there is creating photographs. I hope to inspire a new breed of photographers who are, perhaps, more conscious of their creative ‘why’ as well as their own place here on Earth: as human beings that are a part of Nature and not separate from it.

If you’re interested in the more psychological, philosophical, and spiritual aspects of photography, you’ll enjoy my Five Pillars workshops, where we’ll dive deep into my Five Pillars of Meaningful Landscape Photography™ framework.

  • I usually keep groups small so that every person receives genuine, individual guidance. These workshops are intimate, warm, encouraging, and often quietly transformative. Bring your camera, your curiosity, and your willingness to be surprised by what you discover from me and a group of like-minded attendees.

  • There is as much time spent slowing down and truly looking as there is creating photographs. My Five Pillars of Meaningful Landscape Photography™ framework underpins everything I teach — Connection, Intention, Observation, Attention, and Reflection. These are not rules to follow. They are invitations to a more conscious, purposeful way of working with your camera. If you want to dive deeper, join a Five Pillars workshop.

About Your Guide

I teach as a curious coach more than an instructor, asking thoughtful questions rather than dispensing rules, and creating a warm, non-judgmental space in which everyone feels comfortable learning at their own pace. There are no silly questions in my workshops, only honest ones, and they are always welcome.

I discovered photography during a difficult chapter of my life and found a way back to myself outdoors in the natural world. That experience shapes everything I offer: photography used not only as a hobby or a craft, but as a practice of presence, healing, and reconnection with the world around me

My photographs and essays have been featured in On Landscape, Outdoor Photography, Nature Vision, Smallwoods, and International Therapist, and my debut Finding Light exhibition at Plas Glyn y Weddw — the oldest gallery in Wales — was seen by an estimated 20,000 people. I have guided over 200 other photographers through group workshops, private tuition, and mentoring.

“What an amazing workshop. I’ve visited the area on numerous occasions, but I have never taken in all of its beauty. Brad’s style of tuition is that of a teacher, if required, but more importantly as a coach, making you think, ‘Why am I taking this photo?’ ‘How can I improve it?’ I came away from the day knowing more about my camera, but the biggest takeaway was the realisation that photography really does make you stop, look, and consider your surroundings. Thanks to Brad, I’m itching to get back out in the great outdoors with my camera and look out for more photographic opportunities.’’

FAQ’s

  • If you are still building confidence with your camera — learning your settings, finding your feet with composition — the Foundations pathway is the place to begin. If you are already comfortable with the technical side and are seeking something deeper, more reflective, and more personal to your own creative voice, the Five Pillars pathway will meet you there.

If you are uncertain, a free introductory call is the simplest way to find out. I will happily help you choose based on where you are and what you most hope for. You can book that here.

  • I currently offer workshops in two areas: Mid Wales (including Woodhill Park Estate and the ancient woodlands near Lake Vyrnwy) and Eryri (Snowdonia). Both areas offer relatively flat, accessible terrain. Each workshop listing includes a hiking difficulty rating. Additional locations and residential retreats are planned — newsletter subscribers hear about new dates first.

  • Not at all. The Foundations pathway is designed to be genuinely beginner-friendly, and any camera with manual settings — from an entry-level body upwards — is perfectly suited to the work. You can even attend using a mobile phone if you wish. What matters far more than your equipment or experience is your willingness to slow down, look closely, and be present with the landscape.

  • Most are gently paced and accessible. We rarely walk far, and never at speed — the spirit of the work is to slow down rather than cover ground. If you have any particular mobility needs or concerns, please mention them when booking, and I will make sure the day suits you.

Visit the locations section to learn more about each specific workshop.

  • Your camera, any lenses you own, spare batteries, and a memory card or two. A tripod is helpful but not essential. Beyond that: warm, weather-ready clothing and suitable footwear, a flask of something warm, water, and a snack. Full details are always sent ahead of each workshop once your place is confirmed.

  • Landscape photography is, in many ways, the art of embracing whatever the weather offers; mist, soft rain, and shifting light are often the most rewarding conditions of all. Workshops go ahead unless conditions become genuinely unsafe, in which case an alternative date will be arranged.

  • You will be warmly welcomed to continue your learning journey with me. Many participants go on to one-to-one tuition or into longer mentoring programmes as their practice deepens. You are also warmly invited to join the Finding Light Creative Academy; more on which is just below.

The Finding Light Creative Academy

‘‘I was a little apprehensive beforehand: going on my own, feeling out of practice, and knowing my camera skills aren’t exactly great. But I needn’t have worried. Brad’s patience, kindness, and skill put me at ease straight away. I loved the encouragement to be present in nature, to really take in where we were and notice what we're drawn to. I came home feeling calmer, refreshed, and full of positive energy.’’
