Spirit of Snowdonia, The Silent Waters Landscape Photography Workshop

Evolve your vision and unearth your creative voice throughout this transformative photography workshop with internationally published photographer & writer, Brad Carr

Time & Date: 07:00, 10th October 2026

Duration: 8 Hours

Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced

Difficulty: 2/5 Easy

Attendees: 4

Investment: £150

Join me, Brad Carr, for a transformative and unforgettable woodland photography workshop experience in the legendary ancient landscape of the Gwydir Forest in Eryri (Snowdonia), North Wales.

During the Silent Waters workshop, you’ll have a chance to explore a beautiful and diverse landscape that remains a pretty well-kept secret around the national park. Awaiting you and an intimate group of like-minded, thoughtful photographers are tranquil lakes, old silver birch-lined pathways, spectacular mountainous backdrops, and, with any luck, a gorgeous sunrise. If we are very lucky, we might find ourselves enveloped by the mist or fog that tends to blanket the heathland during the sacred hours of morning.

You’ll have an opportunity to create a multitude of photographs, including both intimate scenes and vistas. This secret corner of Eryri (Snowdonia) provides some truly magical conditions for landscape & Nature photography, away from the usual hustle and bustle that you’ll find in the more well-known locations within the national park.

Much of the day will be spent deep in thought and reflection, as I’ll be asking many questions of you to help you evolve your creative thinking as well as your understanding of your camera and composition.

‘‘Brad’s style of teaching is that of a coach who wants to help you get the best out of your own vision and art. This is not about telling you what to do, it is about asking you to think about why you are taking that particular picture and how you might improve it. This is for those who really want to take their photography to a new level of meaning and thinking. It made me realise that the most important part of the experience is to be out in nature and to try and use my photography to share the benefits of how this makes me feel.’’

The Benefits of Attending My Revolutionary Landscape Photography Workshops

SMALLER GROUPS, DEEPER LEARNING

My workshops are limited to just 4 participants, ensuring you receive substantial one-to-one attention throughout our time together. This intimate group size means your questions get answered, your vision gets explored, and your development gets prioritised.

MASTER UNDERSTANDING OF LIGHT

Woodland photography demands a sophisticated understanding of diffused light, dappled shadows, and subtle tonal relationships. You’ll learn to recognise and work with the nuanced lighting conditions that separate competent woodland images from truly compelling ones.

THE ‘FIVE PILLARS’ FRAMEWORK

Learn and apply my revolutionary Five Pillars methodology (Connection, Intention, Observation, Attention, Reflection) throughout the workshop. This structured approach to meaningful photography provides a framework you’ll use for years to come, long after the workshop ends.

A SAFE SPACE

Create freely in a judgment-free environment where vulnerability is welcomed, and authentic expression is encouraged. This workshop provides a rare opportunity to use photography as a tool for emotional processing and catharsis.

SINGLE-LOCATION IMMERSION

Rather than rushing between locations, we spend the entire day working in intimate pockets. This depth of focus allows you to truly understand a place, witness how light transforms the same scene throughout different conditions, and create a cohesive body of work with genuine depth.

DEVELOP YOUR ARTISTIC VOICE

Through thoughtful questioning and reflective dialogue, I’ll help you unearth what makes your perspective unique so you can make more meaning from your art. This isn’t about imitating my style or anyone else’s; it’s about discovering and refining your own authentic creative voice.

CREATE PORTFOLIO-WORTHY WORK

Leave the landscape with a collection of photographs you’re genuinely proud of; photographs with story, meaning, and depth. These aren’t just practice shots; they’re portfolio pieces that represent your evolving vision and expanding artistic capabilities.

BUILD LASTING CONNECTIONS

Join a small community of like-minded photographers who value depth, meaning, and authentic expression over formulaic approaches. The relationships and ongoing support often prove as valuable as the workshop itself.

What Will We Cover in this Landscape Photography Workshop?

  • Connecting with the subject and environment, and how this leads to deeper and more meaningful photographs.

  • The Five Pillars of Landscape Photography as a model to create photographs with meaning.

  • The art of storytelling through photography.

  • Using photography as a tool for self-discovery. Leaving parts of ourselves behind and finding new parts as we move through landscapes and life.

  • Allowing the photographs to reveal themselves before our eyes.

About Me, Brad Carr

I’m Brad Carr, an internationally published fine art landscape photographer, writer, and creative mentor based in Mid Wales.

My photographs of Wales’ ancient woodlands, serene mountain lakes, and timeless landscapes have been featured in leading photography publications, including On Landscape, Outdoor Photography, and Nature Vision. My debut exhibition, Finding Light, was viewed by an estimated 20,000 people at Plas Glyn y Weddw, one of Wales’ oldest and most prestigious galleries, in 2025.

Over the past seven years behind the camera, I have developed a strong connection to the spirit of Nature and the Welsh landscape, which has inspired an immense amount of personal and spiritual growth. My photography excursions have had a profound impact on the way I view our natural world, as well as producing a positive change in my own health and wellbeing.

I believe that photography can be the vehicle for so much more than merely documenting a location. It provides a platform to communicate complex thoughts and emotions, it can be responsible for profound levels of personal growth, and it can lead us to a place of deeper self-awareness and understanding, allowing us to foster stronger connections and relationships with everyone around us.

My Teaching Philosophy

I am a compassionate, understanding, and patient person. I take my time and communicate in such a way that reaches all levels and abilities. I’m not what you might call a talking teacher. I much prefer to let you experiment and develop your own creativity and vision, whilst I hang around on the sidelines, offering guidance and insights and posing questions for you to ponder.

My greatest desire is to share knowledge and wisdom, communicate my own thoughts and philosophies behind my art, help people to build their own connection to the natural world, and contribute my part towards building a community of people who wish to move in a similar direction and make positive changes towards crafting a better world for tomorrow: one in which we are a part of Nature, and not separate from it.

My Five Pillars of Landscape Photography

Through years of walking Wales’ ancient woodlands and bearing witness to Snowdonia’s transient moods and guiding countless others to refine their creative vision, I’ve developed a framework that addresses what’s often missing in landscape photography education: a structured approach to the deeper work of creating meaningful, self-expressive photographs.

The Five Pillars of Landscape Photography aren’t rules to follow or techniques to master. They are invitations to a more conscious way of working – one that transforms photography from the documentation of a place or recording of time into genuine artistic expression.

The Five Pillars:

1. Connection — Establishing a genuine relationship with the place before lifting the camera

2. Intention — Understanding the deeper purpose behind what you're creating

3. Observation — Moving from looking to truly seeing what the landscape reveals

4. Attention — Focusing your awareness purposefully to craft compelling photographs

5. Reflection — Discovering what your photographs reveal about you and your unique vision

Together, these pillars form the foundation for landscape & Nature photography that transcends technical proficiency and enters the realm of authentic self-expression. We will be exploring these pillars in depth during our time together on this workshop.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

“What an amazing workshop. I’ve visited the area on numerous occasions, but never have I taken in all of its beauty. Brad’s style of tuition is that of a teacher, if required, but more importantly as a coach, making you think, ‘Why am I taking this photo?’ ‘How can I improve it?’ I came away from the day knowing more about my camera, but the biggest takeaway was the realisation that photography really does make you stop, look and consider your surroundings.’’

Book Your Place on a Silent Waters Workshop

FAQ’S

  • This workshop is designed for intermediate to advanced photographers who are comfortable using their camera in manual mode and understand the fundamentals of exposure and composition. If you’re still learning your camera’s basic functions, please consider booking a one-to-one session or joining a beginner-friendly workshop first, such as the Introduction to Nature Photography workshop at Woodhill Park.

  • Yes. The Silent Waters workshop is ideal for photographers who view their practice as a contemplative, mindful engagement with nature. We work slowly and intentionally in this peaceful corner of Eryri, emphasising presence, connection with place, and using photography as a tool for self-discovery. The name ‘‘Silent Waters’’ reflects both the tranquil lakes and the quiet, reflective approach to photography and it gained its name from my foundational creative essay, Seeking Stillness, which features a photograph I titled, Silent Waters.

  • Absolutely. Many photographers reach a point where they’ve mastered the technical aspects but feel their images lack depth or personal meaning. This landscape photography workshop is specifically designed to help you move beyond technical competence into genuine artistic expression.

  • Absolutely. I runThe Land of Dragons workshop in a different part of Snowdonia on the same weekend as this one. You could always join that to further develop your skills and discover another of the national parks hidden gems. Alternatively, perhaps you’d like to hire me for a day of private 1-1 tuition to take things even deeper.

  • Landscape photography is about embracing all conditions. We’ll shoot in mist, rain, overcast skies, and even storms (safely of course!). Some of the most atmospheric and memorable images happen in ‘bad’ weather. We will only postpone if conditions are genuinely dangerous to human life.

  • A camera capable of manual mode, a selection of lenses (wide-angle to telephoto are useful for woodland work), spare batteries, memory cards, and ideally a tripod. Specific equipment recommendations are provided upon booking.

  • With only 4 participants, you’ll receive substantial individual attention throughout the workshop. Exact amounts vary based on each participant’s needs, but everyone receives meaningful one-to-one time for feedback and guidance.

  • Many of my participants would likely describe themselves as introverts. Small group size (max 4 people) means there’s no pressure to perform or compete. There’s plenty of space for quiet contemplation and solo exploration. The atmosphere is always inclusive and supportive, not competitive.

  • Unlike typical Snowdonia workshops that visit iconic, often crowded locations, The Silent Waters explores a ‘‘pretty well-kept secret’’ within the Gwydir Forest—tranquil lakes, silver birch-lined pathways, spectacular mountain backdrops, and misty heathland away from the usual hustle and bustle. We focus on intimate scenes and vistas in this peaceful corner of Eryri, emphasising artistic development and meaningful self-expression over location collecting.

  • I’ll help you discover YOUR authentic voice. While I share my approach, techniques, and philosophy developed through years photographing Eryri, the goal is artistic development, not imitation. Through the Five Pillars framework and thoughtful questioning, you’ll unearth what makes your perspective unique and learn to express it through your landscape photography.

  • The Five Pillars (Connection, Intention, Observation, Attention, Reflection) form a structured approach to creating meaningful, self-expressive photographs. During the workshop, we explore each pillar in depth: establishing genuine relationship with place, understanding your creative purpose, moving from looking to truly seeing, focusing awareness purposefully, and discovering what your photographs reveal about you. This framework transforms photography from documentation into authentic artistic expression.

You can learn more about the Five Pillars framework here.

  • The Silent Waters workshop takes place in a secluded area of the Gwydir Forest in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, North Wales. This ancient woodland area features tranquil lakes, silver birch-lined paths, heathland, and mountain backdrops. The specific location remains ‘‘a pretty well-kept secret’’ to preserve its peaceful character. Exact meeting point details and what3words location are provided upon booking.

  • I recommend accommodation in Betws-y-Coed (10 minutes from location), Llanrwst (15 minutes), Capel Curig (15 minutes), or Dolwyddelan (20 minutes). Betws-y-Coed offers the most choice with numerous B&Bs, hotels, and self-catering options, plus amenities for pre-workshop supplies. Many participants stay 2-3 nights to explore more of Eryri. Booking recommendations can be provided upon registration.
