Photographing with Purpose™

Online group mentoring circles for photographers ready to move beyond technique and into the deeper, quieter work of unearthing their creative voice.

You Have Mastered the Camera, Yet Something is Missing

Maybe you’ve learnt the language of your camera. You understand exposure, composition, and all the rules of photography. You can process your RAW files competently, even beautifully. Your images are all sharp, well-exposed, and properly composed.

Yet when you look at your portfolio, you feel empty. You might see skill without soul, technique without truth, and photographs that document what you saw, but never really express what you felt.

Your photographs look like everyone else’s: the same locations, same light, created using the same formulaic approach. They earn plenty of likes and compliments from peers, but leave you feeling strangely hollow inside. You followed all the rules, ticked all the boxes, and captured a photograph that is technically sound but lacking emotion and story.

You have excellent images, but none of them mean anything much.

Perhaps you’ve sensed there’s something deeper waiting to emerge from within you through your photography; a voice that’s authentically yours, themes that genuinely matter to you, a way of seeing that no one else possesses. But you don’t know how to access it. You don’t know what questions to ask yourself, or how to move beyond the formulas you’ve been taught.

The frustration isn’t in your technical ability. It’s in knowing that your camera could be a tool for genuine self-expression, yet somehow remaining stuck, limited by the rules, and imitating others.

I understand this struggle because I have walked the same path and I have guided more than 200 photographers along their own over the past five years.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

‘‘I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to develop their photographic creativity, learning how to photograph with a purpose that includes emotion and feeling. This has been the perfect course. Brad has helped me to understand more about my inner self and where my passions lie, and how to express that more fully in a body of work.’’

The Gap Where Artistic Vision Meets Creative Voice

In 2025, the curator of Plas Glyn y Weddw, the gallery that hosted my Finding Light exhibition, said something that made me see myself and my work more clearly.

‘‘Brad, you can articulate yourself in both vision and voice. That’s a rare skill to have as a visual artist.’’

— Alex Boyd Jones, Plas Glyn y Weddw

She was right. Most photographers I have encountered excel at one or the other. Some create soulful, captivating work but struggle to articulate what it means. Others can speak eloquently about photography, but their images don’t carry that same depth of feeling.

The gap between what we see and what we can say about our seeing is where many photographers get lost. It is where technical mastery remains disconnected from authentic expression. It is where perfectly composed images remain voiceless, communicating little beyond time and place.

For five years, I have been helping photographers bridge this gap through reflective practices that help them discover what their work is genuinely trying to say. Photographing with Purpose™ is the meeting place of those two worlds; the intersection of what you see and what your soul wants to say through that seeing.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

‘‘The whole group responded with genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, which your approach encouraged beautifully. Your ability to make the discussion accessible to everyone, while ensuring each participant felt heard and valued, was outstanding. I found it so refreshing how you really listened to our contributions and skilfully wove them into your responses—you definitely have the knack! It’s been an absolute pleasure collaborating with you—thank you for such stimulating and well-led sessions.’’

How the Mentoring Circles Work

An intimate four-week journey, walked in the company of a small group of likeminded photographers who share your yearning for deeper, more meaningful work.

The Structure:

3 x 90-minute sessions held bi-weekly over eight weeks

— Maximum six participants to ensure deep & attentive discussions

— Held online via Zoom so you can join from wherever you are

One-to-one moments within the group, including portfolio feedback and conceptual & thematic development support

A private online space for sharing, dialogue, and quiet companionship between sessions

What We Explore

— Discovering what your existing work is already trying to say

— Developing personal themes that genuinely matter to you, rather than following trends

— Using journaling and reflective conversation to unearth your creative voice

— Moving from photographs of landscapes to photographs about your experience of being within them

— Creating work that expresses your unique perspective, rather than imitating others

What Makes This Different

This is not about new techniques or advanced editing; there are plenty of YouTube videos for that. Photographing with Purpose™ is about the deeper, internal, reflective work of developing authentic artistic vision: the work that technical tuition & guidance consistently misses, and that the traditional world of landscape photography so often neglects. Through carefully crafted questions rather than formulaic instruction, I guide you toward discoveries that only you can make about your work and its deeper meanings so you can learn the lessons your photographs are trying to teach you.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

‘‘The series of mentoring workshops was, without doubt, the best that the RPS DI has put on. The emphasis on presence at a location and feelings/emotions as we made work was transformational for me. Rather than a trip through someone’s catalogue or an exposition of technique, this was aimed at fundamentally changing the way I worked, and it succeeded. Brad is a very thoughtful and engaging presenter, and his gentle guidance and attention really brought out the best in me and my fellow participants.’’

Reflection

Where images become teachers, and artistic vision finds its voice.

The Pillars Stand on a Foundation of

Presence

The fundamental practice upon which all meaningful photography is built.

In Photographing with Purpose™, we move through all five pillars together, with particular attention to Reflection. It is the pillar where photographs transform from record ‘snaps’ into art; where your voice becomes clearer; where you stop making images that look like everyone else’s, and begin telling the stories that could only have come from inside you.

The Five Pillars of Meaningful Landscape Photography

The framework that quietly underpins this work: five interconnected practices that transform technically proficient photography into authentic, creative self-expression.

I.

Connection

Moving beyond location-hopping into the embodied experience of a place.

II.

Intention

Photographing about something, rather than merely of something.

IV.

Attention

Where photographs are crafted rather than captured.

III.

Observation

Seeing what is truly there beyond projection and expectation.

Who are these Circles for?

Photographers who are technically proficient but seeking more creativity

— Those hungry for work with deeper meaning and authentic expression

— Those who are willing to explore the internal, reflective dimensions of creative practice

— Those ready to question their approach rather than constantly refine their technique

— Those interested in photography as a path of personal development, not only image-making

— Those seeking the warmth of kinship with others walking a similar creative path

What matters here is not your current level of recognition, but your readiness to meet your work and yourself with more honesty.

See what other Photographers are Saying:

‘‘This was a very enjoyable and thought-provoking set of workshops that provided a springboard from which I can start connecting my feelings to my image making and create a narrative to explain my inner thoughts to others.’’

About Brad Carr

I’m Brad Carr, a fine art landscape photographer, nature writer, and creative mentor from Wales. The art of photography, for me, is a spiritual practice more than a hobby or profession. I came to the camera in my mid-twenties, in the aftermath of a heartbreak that had unmade most of what I thought I knew.

My work has reached tens of thousands of people across multiple platforms, including leading podcasts such as The Photowalk and F-Stop, Collaborate & Listen. My creative essays and mystical photographs of the Welsh landscape have been published in On Landscape, Outdoor Photography, and Nature Vision. My solo Finding Light exhibition in the prestigious Welsh gallery, Plas Glyn y Weddw, was viewed by an estimated 20,000 people.

Over the past five years, I have walked alongside more than 200 meaning-making photographers as they have followed the path to uncover their own creative voice. The Photographing with Purpose mentoring circle is the gentlest entry point onto that path; a safe space to begin your journey to more meaningful photography.
