There is nothing more satisfying for the soul than an early morning walk through a beautiful woodland at sunrise with the tranquil sounds of birdsong and the tap, tap, tapping of the woodpeckers guiding you safely through the trees. The damp, earthy aromas and beautiful vibrant colours through the autumn are a feast for our senses and only add to the welcoming sounds that the woodland has to offer.

This photograph was a result of months of connecting with this wonderful oak woodland here in mid Wales. I spent an estimated 100 hours in here throughout the course of the summer and autumn months. It was a fabulous place to spend my time and this photograph was a just reward for my efforts.

I walked innocently into one of Wales’ most beautiful and ancient oak woodlands, yielding my Stanley flask filled with coffee, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and my Canon 5D IV. As I closed The Fellowship of the Ring for the last time, mounted my flask back into the side pocket of my bag and withdrew my camera, my hands rose to the heavens as beams of soft, golden light shone down on me through the canopy. It was an enlightening moment in my photography journey so far.

This fine art landscape photography print of ‘Royalty’ from the grounds of Powis Castle in Welshpool, Mid Wales is printed on a 300gsm Fujifilm photo rag fine art paper which provides a beautiful texture to all woodland photographs.

What do you see? Some people see animals, some see faces. Others, of course, see a lonely old tree in a field. I see a reflection of myself as I choose to walk across the landscape with one eye closed.

The camera is a tool to capture parts of the soul, created with the often forgotten sixth sense of intuition. Photographs are responses to stimuli - light and colour mainly, but, more importantly, they are translations of internal feelings. Photographs, to me, are self-portraits, as they reflect, too, the inner world of the artist, as well as what they record in the outer world. Although I am often drawn to something that I see, it is usually only when I hear the birds sing in the internal landscape, and feel stillness within, that I am drawn to open the shutter to capture the light that fills my eyes.

On one level, this might be a tree in a field. On another, it might contain faces and animals. On yet another, is holds within, a story of my own, and now of yours, too. It also holds the story of Nature which is a universal one, and stands here as another link in the chain of consciousness for which there is no beginning or end. Our minds, aware of the concept of time, and, therefore, of beginnings and endings, past and future, might see the old tree on its’ own stage, as I did, sharing wisdom from the past to create a better future for us.

Throughout history, the oak tree has been represented in different mythologies and sometimes linked to powerful gods (in Greek mythology it was a symbol of Zeus, the God of Thunder.) These beautiful and elegant trees have become associated with longevity, strength, stability, endurance, fertility, power, justice, and honesty.
